Lynette Jee went from being a civil rights attorney in San Francisco to owning one of the biggest tea businesses in Hawaii. She started by experimenting with different tea varieties and fruit nectars at home and her interest just grew bigger. Having a herbalist as a grandfather, Lynette probably had a natural ability in this arena, but she admits her career move was somewhat impulsive. She decided to go for it after realizing that the tea market was kind of wide open. After landing big accounts particulary Sheraton Moana Surfrider, Halekulani and Princeville Resort, it appears she made a good choice.

After spending 50 years on the meat business, Donald Lau retired from his career. But after only a few years, he and his wife decided to enter the business world again, this time on a hydroponic lettuce growing operation. In 1999, Donald opened May’s Wonder Gardens, a 10-acre lettuce farm giving tribute to his wife Bernadette, whose second name is May. While this seems pretty small, May’s actually has 298 growing benches with 400 plants each, harvesting about 10 benches per day or 4000 plants total. May’s Wonder Gardens is Hawaii’s biggest and most modern lettuce farm located on the hills of Haleiwa. They are one of the premier suppliers of hydroponically grown lettuce all over Hawaii. They deliver island fresh lettuce harvests daily to both wholesalers and retailers for the best quality and with better shelf life reaching 7 to 10 days longer.

It all started in 1932. Manuel Nobriga made ice cream from scratch at the Maui Soda and Ice Works Plant in Wailuku, Maui. The local ice cream parlors loved the richness of the flavors, as well as the velvety smooth texture of his creations. Later, they packed them in ½ gallon cartons so that patrons can take them home. It was four decades later that his son, David “Buddy” Nobriga branded it its fitting Maui name Roselani, which combined the Hawaiian word Lokelani and its American translation heavenly rose, incidentally Maui’s official flower. Today, third generation ice cream maker Cathy Nobriga Kim adds life to Roselani Tropics Ice Cream by injecting newer and more innovative island flavors to their classic brand. Roselani Tropics Ice Cream is now available in markets, as well as restaurants statewide.
