After spending 50 years on the meat business, Donald Lau retired from his career. But after only a few years, he and his wife decided to enter the business world again, this time on a hydroponic lettuce growing operation. In 1999, Donald opened May’s Wonder Gardens, a 10-acre lettuce farm giving tribute to his wife Bernadette, whose second name is May. While this seems pretty small, May’s actually has 298 growing benches with 400 plants each, harvesting about 10 benches per day or 4000 plants total. May’s Wonder Gardens is Hawaii’s biggest and most modern lettuce farm located on the hills of Haleiwa. They are one of the premier suppliers of hydroponically grown lettuce all over Hawaii. They deliver island fresh lettuce harvests daily to both wholesalers and retailers for the best quality and with better shelf life reaching 7 to 10 days longer.
May’s Wonder Gardens offers several varieties particularly Butter Lettuce, Red Leaf, Green Leaf, Manoa, Lolla Rossa and Romaine.
