The art of making tofu takes a lifetime to master, but not for Kamesaburo and Tsukuro Uyehara. In 1950, they took over their friends company and started the Aloha Tofu Factory. Fame and popularity was not part of their dream for their company but instead, it was a means to provide food at their table. From the first tofu shop at Dillingham to the Ala Moana Farmers Market, which was swept out in a fire, the Aloha tofu factory rose to Akepo Lane in Kalihi where it can still be found today.
The first tofu was said to be made through the addition of sea salt to mashed soybeans which then solidified. Aloha Tofu took this and made the soft and firm tofu. Their firm tofu is considered the most flexible of all because of its ability to be infused with flavor and its shape not being changed no matter how it is cooked. Their soft tofu on the other hand, has a custard-like texture. Aside from these two, they also offer other tofu products such as soft tofu, deep fried tofu pouches and deep fried tofu.
The Uheyara family built the Aloha Tofu Factory through hard work and determination. They believed that the people of Hawaii deserved the best tofu there is. Today, the Uheyara family sees their vision alive as they provide the best of tofu through the Aloha Tofu factory.
