In the multi-ethnic district in Kalihi right outside downtown Honolulu, five Japanese families collaborated to create the Aloha Shoyu company in 1946. This team’s dedication and entrepreneurial spirit powered them all throughout to contend with years of tough competition with their limited capital to become today’s market leader in Hawaii’s Soy Sauce sales.
Soy Sauce has always been an essential flavor component in Asian cuisines but only recently has it gained appeal and popularity in Western kitchens. This ingredient combines a special balance of the flavors of soy beans, wheat and salt to create arguably one of the most widely used condiment in Asian cooking.
Aloha Shoyu represents the company’s island heritage along with their Japanese origin to reflect what we believe in. Shoyu roots from Japan and means Soy Sauce and Aloha signifies kindness, unity, humility and perseverance, virtues that are important in Hawaiian culture. Over the last 60 years, Aloha Shoyu has stood their ground operating with their company values that manifest in their products. This is what they expect of themselves and what the consumers should expect on the Aloha Shoyu product.
